Main Equipment
Initially, all you need is a loose T-Shirt and tracksuit bottoms. We do not wear any form of shoes in the dojo while training or sparring.
The essential equipment you will need in order to grade and to spar in the Dojo is as follows:
Gi- A white karate suit consisting of trousers and top. Made from cotton and available in various “weights” (the heavier the weight the more durable the Gi). The Gi must have three badges on it. A blue “calligraphy” on the left breast, a BKK “Kanku” on the left upper arm and the IFK wave badge on the right upper arm.
Belt- Worn around the waist outside the Gi top. The colour indicates the grade of the student. Beginners wear a white belt and advance through red, blue, yellow, green, brown and finally to a black belt.
Sparring Pads- Consisting of a pair of white “Shin-Instep” pads, a pair of white “Hand Mitts” and either a groin protector for men or a chest protector for women.
License- Provides membership of the BKK and IFK. Also provides limited insurance in the case of injury sustained in the Dojo or in competition. Licenses must be renewed every year. Juniors £12.50 and Seniors £25.
Further Equipment
The following equipment is not essential, but many Karateka have found them useful.
Bag Gloves- Lightly padded leather gloves designed to prevent damage to the skin of the knuckles when punching a punch bag.
Wraps- Long cotton strips wrapped around the hand and wrist to support the small bones of the hand and to protect the knuckles when punching the bag or sparring.
Gum Sheild- Worn in the mouth to protect the gums and teeth during sparring/competition. Can be custom made by a dentist or generic.

Kata Book- Step by step pictorial explanation of all Kyokushin Kata. Written by Hanshi Steve Arneil.
Kihon Book- Pictorial representation of all the techniques of Kyokushin Karate, grouped by grade. Written by Hanshi Steve Arneil.
